Storyteller and LGBTQ+ Advocate
ABOUT ME

At age eighteen, coming to terms with my queer identity was only possible through reading other people’s stories. Glasses reflecting the blue light of my phone screen, I would voraciously explore LGBTQ+ online spaces, where learning about my peers’ unique journeys gave me the strength to assert myself and find community. I experienced firsthand how impactful storytelling can be, especially for young, marginalized communities.
Over the past two years, I have strived to cultivate my own storytelling skills in both academic and professional opportunities. As a Professional Writing minor and Raab Writing Fellow, I have channeled my passion for stories into a variety of writing styles including research, PR, op-eds, and even a creative zine documenting the oral histories of gender non-conforming students. In my work, I found the capacity of different narratives to motivate and excite, driving us as agents of social change.
Through grant writing for Worldhealer, a nonprofit creating educational workshops for K-8 students, I was able to construct and adapt its story for different grantmakers, providing me with the first feeling that my writing truly impacted my community. Now as a community relations intern at Wilderness Youth Project, I channel the organization’s brand into inspiring blogs, employee profiles, and promotional content. My experience crafting compelling stories about nature connection has further demonstrated the power of a nonprofit’s narrative to speak to the community.
As I graduate this year from UCSB with a degree in Feminist Studies, I strive to continue telling powerful stories that inspire young people looking for connection and resources.
When I am not writing, you can find me taking nature walks around Santa Barbara or spending time with family and friends. You can contact me at jbarreraalcorace@icloud.com or (661)-877-6115.
