CHARTING HER OWN COURSE: THE BOLD RISE OF MICHELLE HOWARD

February, 2022

This is an in-depth profile of Wilderness Youth Project's director of development, Michelle Howard. A resident of Santa Barbara, California for more than thirty years, Michelle is the poster child for wearing many hats, synthesizing her interests and skills to cultivate her own, unique career as a writer and development professional in the nonprofit sector.

MORE THAN JUST COMPANY POLICY: UNPACKING THE NECESSITY OF PRONOUNS IN THE WORKPLACE

February, 2022

If you are apprehensive or curious about how to implement pronouns on the job, this is the guide for you! In this piece, I give a simple and easy-to-follow rundown of what pronouns are, who has them, why they are relevant, how they might manifest in the workplace, why you should care, and how to make your co-workers more comfortable.

STORY OF THE SELF: FINDING YOUR PURPOSE THROUGH FINDING COMMUNITY

January, 2022

A story of the self can become the story of us. This piece is a creative meditation on how and why I became passionate about civic engagement writing. As a queer, nonbinary feminist and writer, it is important for me to reflect on how my identity impacts the work I do today and what I want to do with my writing going forward

ENDING HOMELESSNESS AMONG LGBTQ YOUTH IN CALIFORNIA: A COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVE

June, 2020

What I aspire to do is actionable writing, which is writing that has a life beyond the page. With this piece, which originated as an assignment in my Writing for Global Careers class, I aimed to theorize a way to implement a statewide, community-based action plan that would help LGBTQ+ youth find affirming and safe housing during the COVID-19 crisis.

"We live impossible lives. I'm not supposed to be here. You are not supposed to be here. You are not supposed to have the consciousness you have now. You are not supposed to be able to reach the people you are reaching, but you did. It's not that impossible things aren't going to happen, it's that when we get the right people in the right room, we can make them happen."
